Casting Lots in the Bible - In Reply - 2 years ago
The practice of casting lots is mentioned seventy times in the Old Testament and seven times in the New Testament. In spite of the many references to casting lots in the Old Testament, nothing is known about the actual lots themselves. They could have been sticks of various lengths, flat stones like coins, or some kind of dice; but their exact nature is unknown. The closest modern practice to casting lots is likely flipping a coin.
The practice of casting lots occurs most often in connection with the division of the land under Joshua (Joshua chapters 14-21), a procedure that God instructed the Israelites on several times in the book of Numbers ( Numbers 26:55; 33:54; 34:13; 36:2). God allowed the Israelites to cast lots in order to determine His will for a given situation ( Joshua 18:6-10; 1 Chronicles 24:5,31). Various offices and functions in the temple were also determined by lot ( 1 Chronicles 24:5, 31; 25:8-9; 26:13-14). The sailors on Jonah's ship ( Jonah 1:7) also cast lots to determine who had brought God's wrath upon their ship. The eleven apostles cast lots to determine who would replace Judas ( Acts 1:26). Casting lots eventually became a game people played and made wagers on. This is seen in the Roman soldiers casting lots for Jesus' garments ( Matthew 27:35).
The New Testament nowhere instructs Christians to use a method similar to casting lots to help with decision-making. Now that we have the completed Word of God, as well as the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide us, there is no reason to be using games of chance to make decisions. The Word, the Spirit, and prayer are sufficient for discerning God's will today-not casting lots, rolling dice, or flipping a coin.
Mishael: people ought always seek the Lord for answers to problems and decisions. Sometimes, NO answer is the answer. Be sure your question is a Godly one. also, God appointed prophets to speak the answer of the Lord: do this or do that. Today: we pray.
Hello Janet. Sometimes these lists of the generations & families of important folk in the Bible, can get confusing. So I'll try to explain a little.
In 1 Chronicles chapter 23, we see from verse 6, that David organized the Levites into their specific appointments. Their father was Levi (of the tribe of the same name from Jacob). From Levi, came Gershon, Kohath & Merari (v6). From Kohath came Amram, Izhar, Hebron & Uzziel (v12). From Amram came Moses & Aaron (v13). And from Moses came Gershom & Eliezer (v15). (I've only shown the names that are specific to your question).
Now we get to the problem. Often in the Bible, we see the repetition of certain phrases, particularly in relation to genealogies. In this instance, we read, 'the sons of...'. Most of the families listed had several sons, but Eliezer had only one son (Rehabiah) shown as the founder (chief) - and he had a very large family & generations after him. So, even when it says in verse 17, "And the sons of Eliezer were", the wording only follows the pattern laid out before - but Eliezer only had the one son.
Then in verse 22 (your other query), the mention of Eleazar (vv21,22), is a different one (even seen from the spelling of the name). This Eleazar, was the son of Mahli (v21), who was the son of Merari (v21), who was the son of Levi (v6).
And 1 Chronicles 24:28, we read that from Mahli came Eleazar (as we saw him earlier), & this Eleazar had no sons (v28 & 1 Chronicles 23:22).
I hope you can work through all that, though maybe the puzzle in your mind is, 'why is Eliezer showing up in different families?' Of course, the answer to that is, that it's not the same Eliezer/Eleazar.
Hey Sacha! My prayer is simple - all your inquiries are genuine and that you truly seek the truth. I say this because your questions remind me of the time that the apostle Paul was on Mars Hill in Athens ( Acts 17) talking to the people gathered there.
All of your questions are readily answered and covered in the scriptures. I recommend you read the KJV of the Bible. The questions you raised are not anything to be surprised at, nor to get excited about. You have not stated that you don't believe in the devil, just in a certain behavior by him.
I agree with you about hell, because there are the ignorant and sinners in heaven also (like me), and the demons don't do the torturing in hell.
I agree with you whole heartedly, that I too do not believe "any" will go to heaven, only a certain group (of which I am a part of).
As far as the scriptures you have referenced - Mark 13: 32 and Genesis 22- to truly understand them you must read and study it in its entirety. I mean the whole chapter should be read and especially the complete Bible.
However, truth cannot be understood unless you have the same mind as the Author of the Scriptures. You must be born again to understand the whole counsel of the Lord God Jesus Christ.
From your other posts on this forum, you seem to be knowledgeable of the Words of God. I thank you for your kind words of blessing from your god. I extend to you the blessings of the true God of the Scriptures of whom I serve. May His face shine on you and your family.
Ok everyone ,this seems like as good a time as any so im going to put myself right out there and before i do may i say that it is a testament to you all that i feel safe enough here to tell you all the other things that i dont believe ,hang on to your hats ! I dont believe that the devil is some sort of supernatural being that seduces us into sinfull ways ,i dont believe that hell as a place where the ignorant and sinners go to be tortured by demons for eternity exists and i dont believe that any of us will go to heaven .Questions will be answered one at a time at my earliest convenience ,thankyou for listening and i still would like some one to please explain Mark ch13 v32 and Genesis ch22 ,thankyou again .Its 10-30pm here so im off to bed ,goodnight and may God continue to bless you all everyday .
From just a simple reading of Genesis chapter 49, it would be difficult to formulate an association of Jacob's twelve sons with the twelve signs of the zodiac. I wonder whether your husband has been influenced by some extra-biblical readings, such as by Thomas Mann and his book, "Joseph and his brothers" written over 17 years (1926-1943). In that book, Mann certainly uses the biblical account of Genesis but adds much more to his book that is clearly unbiblical & taken from other writings or his own imaginations. Or, your husband may have read from other publications to form his view.
As "All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God" ( 2 Timothy 3:16), Jacob could well have given his blessings/prophecy on his sons based on their character & life's propensities, but certainly inspired by God to reveal much more than Jacob would have known. And knowing what an important part the 12 Tribes have played in the history of Israel, it seems clear that those blessings were ordained of God & not as a result of Jacob's consultation with the stars.
According to him it's in the 49th chap. of Genesis. I do not accept this because his blessing was according to their character. I think he bases it on the fact of the word Judah bases because Judah is referred to as a Lion.
I was speaking to another friend during this conversation not King James in pertulicar! All Bibical discussions should be discussed at the discretion of the person. If there are guidelines then it using free discussion! If you had read the result of that discussion I had made it in direct reasoning of the biblical verse! Thank you I shall make my next discussion private!
Hi Clara ,Abraham did not ever have anything to do with astrology ,if your husband keeps insisting about this then i would ask him to prove it and show you where it says this in the Bible ,if he is able to do this please come back on here and tell us which book and chapter and verse your husband thinks indicates this ,i would love to know why he thinks this ,thankyou and him and may God bless you both .
Did Abraham bless his Son's according to the signs of the zodiac or was it according to their character? My husband says it was according to the zodiac I disagree.
18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits (demons), and unto WIZARDS that PEEP, and that MUTTER: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this WORD (the Bible), it is because there is no light in them.
21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king (parents) and their God, and look upward.
22 And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness (EVIL).
Comment: I believe this passage is speaking about COMPUTERS. In the days of AOL, when you turned the computer to go into aol chat rooms, the computer "peeped and muttered".
Example, listen to opening credits on the movie: "You've Got Mail". You'll hear the sounds.
Google is not necessarily our pals. I was told one new search engine is reliable as far as privacy: DuckDuckGo. You'd have to change your browser.
Browsers have become a tool to capture people so they can spy on our browsing habits. This bears some looking into.
Turning little kids loose on the Internet is not safe. If you're safe, their friends parents may be wreckless in strictness and control of what children view, hear.
It's NOT Tom & Jerry anymore, folks! They're playing witches, warlocks, thrones, kingdoms; some games are outright OCCULT. In the Bible, people who created these games, get other people interested in the occult: are living under Gods Death sentence. There are demons associated with this subject matter. Demons that disturb your sleep, concentration, attitudes and more!
I was reading Corinithians 1 verse 40& 41 I was interested in the new reports of aliens and the Space sightings of strange ships, and if it here in these verses explain the differences in stars in the heavens and if there may be different bodies we don't know about?
The "course of Abia" ( Luke 1:5) is the 8th of 24 priestly courses (watches) that were followed by Aaron and his sons (priest line) as given in 1 Chronicles 24:10. This is the course Zacharias the father of John the Baptist was following.
The first day of the first month according to the Enoch calendar is ALWAYS the 4th (FOURTH) day of the week. A check for this can be found in the book of Jubilees where it states that the Festival of Shavuot is ALWAYS the 15th day of the 3rd month and is ALWAYS the FIRST day of the week. So if you count backwards to the 1st day of the 1st month it will ALWAYS be the 4th day of the week.
(Enoch 72:32-34) states that there is a separation day that is to occur at the spring equinox which separates each year. It is the day after day 364 and it does NOT have a day attached to it. It is the time from the end of the 364th day until the spring equinox. The day after the 364th day is intercalated.
The Enoch calendar is a holy priestly calendar that is based on 364 days ONLY. The extra time until the equinox is used to calibrate the New Year. That time is not counted. The calendar is perfectly rectified every year.
The Enoch calendar is 364 days EXACTLY look at (Enoch 74:10, 12, 81:6, 7, 11, Jubilees 6:32, 38) The solar cycle is 365.242 days.
All ancient (and current) calendars are generally reckoned upon a twelve month 30 day cycle with 5 days added.
The SUN is the ONLY tool used to calibrate the calendar. The sun is the great sign on earth and highlights the Sabbath day and the spring equinox is the great calibration sign to mark the yearly cycle
As stated above, the calendar resets every year on the 4th day of the 1st month. The 1st day of the 1st month is always the 4th day of the week. The 4th day of the 1st month is always a Sabbath

Why was this fact chosen to be the only question? Why is it important?
:)
Thank You
