Sackcloth and ashes is extreme mourning and / or repentance. sackcloth was rough uncomfortable for clothing. Sitting in ashes was dirty and I suppose symbolic of being dirty and burn out? It is humility before the Lord

2 Samuel 3:31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.

Genesis 37:34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

Nehemiah 9:1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

Psalms 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

Daniel 9:3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

    Q

what does it means when the bible say sackcloth and ashes?
  • Lisa - In Reply on Daniel 9 - 4 years ago
The rod? Have you heard a saying that goes "spare the rod, spoil the child" chastisement
The staff? That was used as a comfort.. so to speak. Before the Bible was in existence
To dwell in the house of the Lord?
As a Christian, we are not perfect, we fall short daily, many times daily. We should live a Christian life, if ya know it's wrong, don't do it. Be ye a separate people. Do not be conformed to the world. Live your life as God was right there with you every second of the day. And pray ask for forgiveness when you mess up.. nobody can walk your walk but you. 😁

In Psalm 23- what is the 'rod' and the 'staff' referred to in this Psalm? Gods Word? Gods Holy Spirit?
What does it mean to 'dwell' in the house of The Lord? Is it practicing the presence of God always? To dwell???? How can I dwell in the house of The Lord as I do my every day chores? go to work? do my shopping etc
Thank you for your help in clarifying these for me.

faithful Daniel (though a slave in a foreign country) holds a high office in government; he has not forgotten Jehovah /God; also this prayer of Daniel clearly teaches us in 2019 why GOD allowed HIS wrath on the promised-land. This prayer of Daniel is applicable to us because the whole world has repeated that day /then. So Being SAVED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS is our only HOPE. The trial-date is set.

I SEE DANIEL'S HUMILITY IN PRAYERS THAT WON GOD'S FAVOUR.IF WE NEED OUR PRAYERS TO BE ANSWERED SPEEDILY THEN WE MUST BE HUMBLE IN OUR PETITION TO GOD.

Verses 1,2~Daniel was now an older man, but he was still a deep student of God's Word. We want to continue to read the Bible throughout all the days of our lives like Daniel did.
  • Harvey plunkett on Daniel 9 - 6 years ago
Jesus is record twice to have commended the reading and understanding of Daniel. Matt. 24 and in mrk. This commendation would seem to imply daniel was, even in that era, open for intelligent understand of times relative to events in their order for sequence: "signs for the times."

verse 27 - I think it is foolishness and irresponsible as a servant of the Lord to try to make up methods and formulas for deciphering things that are declared sealed by God. What things ARE revealed to us, are the things we should occupy ourselves in; for they are the things which we must give account for when the Master returns. As we grow in grace and are able to bear it, He will show us more.

(Cont.) Yet there are multitudes of immature and misguided, who know nothing nor seem to have any clue to seek for, the kind of character that God WOULD INDEED RESPECT, in order to find knowledge. Daniel was confessing and repenting, and acknowledging the truth about himself and of all God's people; NOT seeking to be anything great! THEN did the LORD send to give him understanding of all things!

While Daniel was speaking, confessing his sins and the sins of Israel; while he was confessing the righteousness of God and praying for His mercy and forgiveness; while Daniel was mortified and in a horror of grief because his people for all that they had suffered of punishment for their sins, still did not repent nor seek God at all! That's when the Angel was sent to give him understanding!

False prophets seek their own glory, and have not heard the Lord's voice at all; but speak out of the worthless imagination of their own hearts. Should we then be afraid of them or their words? I suppose not! Everyone who has tried to say they know something which the Lord Himself said "It is not given for you to know!" is a liar seeking only for men to worship HIMSELF, and works against the LORD!
  • BSP on Daniel 9 - 6 years ago
Verse 2 shows how deep of a student Daniel was of God's written Word. We should strive to imitate his example.

Israel's 4 Great Jubilee Redemption Cycles of 490 years are:
    (i) Birth of Abram to the Exodus
(ii) The Exodus to the Dedication of Solomon’s Temple.
(iii) The Dedication of Solomon’s Temple to the Decree to Restore Jerusalem by Artaxerxes ( Ezra 7)
(iv) Decree to Restore Jerusalem to the Death and Resurrection of Christ. (This is Daniel's 70 weeks.)
  • Ann Hering on Daniel 9 - 6 years ago
The 70 Weeks of Daniel 9:24 are Israel's Babylon captivity to lay land fallow.

The Threescore and Two Weeks (62x7weeks =434 years) of Daniel 9:25 is the 400 years of silence (between Malachi to Matthew) AND Jesus' 34 years on this Earth.

Jesus has to serve 2 weeks total, 7 years for Leah (oldest) THEN for Rachel (younger) 7 years of Tribulation (Rachel's Weeping) the week of Daniel 9:27.

  • Jeff Mentzos on Daniel 9 - 6 years ago
When Israel was freed from Babylon the prophet was given the future of his people until the kingdom. 70 weeks equals 490 years which 0f which 483 were finished upon Jesus' baptism and he ministered for 3 1/2 years when he went to heaven. There remains 3 1/2 years yet to be fulfilled which will be finished during the 7 trumps by the 144,000 He indwells in the Spirit.

Question for Elijah Luthor! What is the 70 weeks of Daniel 9:24? Is this the 70 years Jerusalem was taken in captivity to Babylon?
  • A disciple on Daniel 9 - 6 years ago
Elijah; very interesting information, but how useful for the simple? I too like to learn facts and history, but at a certain point you're gonna bore your audience a hole in the toe! We should use knowledge to expound and amplify spiritual knowledge that brings people to really know the Lord. All else seems to only want to glorify the one talking, because no one else is listening anymore. Write me!

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was crucified on April, Wednesday the 25th, A.D. 0031 [Julian-Augustan calendar system]. He resurrected on Saturday evening before sunset or dusk. The news of His resurrection was first learned about on Sunday morning. Forty (40) days later, the Messiah corporeally 'ascended' to Paradise in the Kingdom of Heaven on June, Thursday the 7th, A.D. 0031. Neato, huh?!

Why are you so naive? Why don't you ask to Daniel in person? He is reborn and alive. Daniel 12:13

70 weeks have been fulfilled. "He" in the 27th verse is the Messiah. This prophecy and vision is about the Messiah, and the time determined upon Daniel's people, City and Temple. After He was cut off, the covenant kept being confirmed by apostles and disciples by the Spirit of Christ to the circumcision until Acts 7. Romans 15:8 Galatians 3:17 Malachi 3:1, Micah 7:19-20, Luke 1:68-74, Acts 7.

Close. 483 yrs from Artaxerxes command. This prophecy tells can the exact yr Jesus began ministry, cut off mid week (crucified) and God giving up on the Jews, giving it over to the Gentiles. The stoning of Stephen at end of last week. It all started in 457 BC. 27 ad Christ announced. Killed 31 ad, Steph stoned 34 ad. Not an anti-Christ, it's a system that's been around since Jesus left. Rome

was it 483 years from the time of the temple's rebuilding under Cyrus till

Jesus rode on the donkey into the temple, claiming to be the Messiah? Therefore the last week or seven years is from the time the Anti-Christ commits the Abomination of Desolation which ends in the victorious return of our Lord?

I see "future antichrist" when the antichrist, and many antichrists, are already in the world. Antichrists deny daily that CHRIST JESUS is in the flesh, which is His church, His temple, His body of believers as members of CHRIST carrying His Holy Spirit. Be blessed in Christ. Amen. 1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world. 2 John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

Daniel 9 is clear up to the 26th verse. From Cyrus's decree to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of Jesus the Messiah to his crucifixion and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans..all is clear. Then there is verse 27. Isn't it possible that this "he" could refer to Jesus also and not in the future but in the past. The temple sacrifices ceased after Jesus died and the curtain was rent in two from top to bottom. Jesus did make a new covenant with us, making the old one obsolete. Why are we applying the last week to the future? And to someone else. I say the "he" in verse 27 causes ambiguity but I am not entirely sure that it should apply to the future anti-Christ.
