  • Is using drugs wrong?
  • Richard H Priday
As another commentary states; anything causing harm to others and INCLUDING going against the conscience of another brother or causing others with substance abuse issues to be tempted to relapse is wrong. Anything which controls our mind or bodies and inhibits our conscience or grieves the Holy Spirit is wrong. Overall; I can't see any good in "recreational drug use". The word "Pharmakia" in the original language denotes occult practices that often accompany the "trips" which substances cause where demons themselves often take possession of someone and at times supersede the power of the drug itself. In Revelation 18:23 such practices are said to part of "Mystery Babylon" dominating the world in the last days and even more so in the Tribulation.

Prescription drugs; on the other hand can be beneficial or like the first example; used for the wrong purposes and are often obtained through corrupt doctors or fake prescriptions as well as other methods of obtaining these substances. Therefore; they are just as dangerous when used improperly for any reason than normally prescribed. When they ARE used correctly; they can still become addictive therefore must be monitored carefully; especially among youth today. The other extreme is those who have debilitating physical conditions or mental illness. In the first case; things such as medical marijuana certainly are validated. There are nutrutional benefits at least to that plant that tobacco for instance a toxic substance doesn't have. God can heal; but there should NOT be immediate withdrawal from antidepressants as I personally have seen suicide result from that. As a general principle; the natural herbs and plants should be utilized for the most effective compounds that work together and exceed benefits of manufactured chemical substances. We should learn what we should and should NOT combine with other foods and medications; thus be informed. When not clear we should pray whether to take or abstain.

Substance abuse is wrong for the harm it causes the body and for the harm, it does to others when the person under the drug's influence gets into an accident that does damage. I am not aware of any verse that specifically mentions illicit drug use. Drug addiction can be blamed for provoking sinners to commit theft, murder, violence, and other sins, and can reduce a person and family to rags due to its cost and negative effect on worker's dependability and capabilities.
