Wesley's Notes for Acts 2:17

2:17 The times of the Messiah are frequently called the last days, the Gospel being the last dispensation of Divine grace. I will pour out of my Spirit - Not on the day of pentecost only, upon all flesh - On persons of every age, sex, and rank. And your young men shall see visions - In young men the outward sense, are most vigorous, and the bodily strength is entire, whereby they are best qualified to sustain the shock which usually attends the visions of God. In old men the internal senses are most vigorous, suited to divine dreams. Not that the old are wholly excluded from the former, nor the young from the latter.

People's Bible Notes for Acts 2:17

Ac 2:17 It shall come to pass in the last days. The phrase "Last days" was used by the Jews to denote the last dispensation, that of Christ. See Isa 2:2. I will pour out of my Spirit. A figurative expression to indicate abundant gifts of the Spirit. Upon all flesh. On all races, not on the Jews alone. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. "To prophesy" in the New Testament means to communicate religious truth by divine authority, as well as to foretell the future. The prophecy was fulfilled in the inspired speaking on Pentecost and afterwards, as well as by the daughters of Philip (21:9). It will be seen that both sexes are included. See visions . . . dream dreams. Such visions as that of Peter at Joppa (Ac 10:9-16). Such dreams as that of Paul at Troas, where he saw the Macedonian asking him to "Come and help us" (Ac 16:9).

Discussion for Acts 2

Acts 2:4 - I've seen the question on here (on the comments back pgs.) - "I've tried to explain to my congregation that the holy ghost and the holy spirit are two separate things." I'm sure v. 4 is where they got this erroneous idea. Had Luke said, "..... as the ghost gave them utterance." it would have been ludicrous, as you can see. Isa. 1:18 - Come now, let us reason together ..... ".

Acts 18:2 says Aquila was from Pontus. I got curious, looked up Pontus. And the article reminded me there were people (Greeks, "strangers") present on the Day of Pentecost, Acts 2:9. It was during the Roman period that Christianity entered Pontus and near-by areas from the Roman 'dispersion'. God wanted His people to spread His word beyond Jerusalem, and this is how he did it.

To Nene - thank-you so much for your encouragement. We're walking with Him and He's revealed His truth to us and we have His strength, but - when people disparage us - it hurts; even people we'll never meet, have never seen. That must be the sorrow of His spirit in us ..... ? But I'm fine, going through a 'dry' spell, but I made contact real good with Jesus this a.m. I love you, Nene, in Jesus.

The 4 gospels laid the foundation for the beginning of Jesus' church. The church began in Acts Ch. 2 with the first message by Peter, then the question, " ..... men and brethren, what shall we do?" Peter's answer, "Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift if the Holy Ghost."
    This is salvation.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, ...............yet knowing how way leads to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged ...... and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. Acts 2:37-38
