Wesley's Notes for 2 Timothy 4:8

4:8 The crown of that righteousness - Which God has imputed to me and wrought in me. Will render to all - This increases the joy of Paul, and encourages Timotheus. Many of these St. Paul himself had gained. That have loved his appearing - Which only a real Christian can do. I say a real Christian, to comply with the mode of the times: else they would not understand, although the word Christian necessarily implies whatsoever is holy, as God is holy. Strictly speaking, to join real or sincere to a word of so complete an import, is grievously to debase its noble signification, and is like adding long to eternity or wide to immensity.

People's Bible Notes for 2 Timothy 4:8

2Ti 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me. As the successful competitor in the games receives a crown, so the crown awaited him. A crown of righteousness. The crown given for righteousness. The Lord, the righteous judge. He was about to die by the sentence of an unrighteous judge. The higher Judge would reverse the sentence and give him a crown. And not to me only. All can have the same hope. All who serve him, and would love to see him come as their vest friend, shall have the same crown.

Discussion for 2 Timothy 4

"Preach the word..For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.." The redemption of our souls is precious, and it ceases for ever; and man also knows not his time! How many times will the Lord keep sending; instant in season, out of season; reproving, rebuking, exhorting? It will happen one day that our time here is over, and we will wish we could bring back one hour to repent!

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;" We should be glad for every opportunity to communicate the grace and knowledge which the Lord has given us; but we understand too that men are free to choose their own way instead of the way of the Spirit if they really want to. If they did so to the Lord "in the green tree" what should we expect from those kind now "in the dry?"

2 Timothy 4:6-7 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. This must of been Paul's last Epistles knowing he was going to be put to death. That man kept the faith all the way through his life with Jesus. Praise the Lord.

Jesus preached about Hell, and Gehenna, and Damnation of the wicked, and the worm that never dies, and wailing and gnashing of teeth, and about a certain rich man who ended up "Tormented in this flame." "But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." "..except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

Steve; EXCELLENT SCRIPTURES, as usual! "WE ARE OF GOD HE THAT KNOWETH GOD HEARETH US; HE THAT IS NOT OF GOD HEARETH NOT US: HEREBY KNOW WE THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH AND THE SPIRIT OF ERROR." When we abide in Jesus, and His Words abide in us, we shall ask what we will and it shall be done unto us: herein is the Father glorified, that we bear much fruit. The good fruit can only come from the good tree!

For the time will come when they will not hold fast to Christ's doctrine, because they covet and gather to themselves many teachers that are "soothsayers", because they have hearts that only want to hear what makes them feel good/special, proud, accomplished, important, safe, puffed up. I worked with a woman who said "When they start preaching about hell, I walk out."
