Wesley's Notes for 2 Samuel 1:20

1:20 Tell it not - This is not a precept, but a poetical wish; whereby he doth not so much desire, that this might not be done, which he knew to be impossible; as, express his great sorrow, because it would be done, to the dishonour of God, and of his people. The daughters - He mentions these, because it was the custom of women in those times and places to celebrate those victories which their men obtained, with triumphant songs and dances.

Discussion for 2 Samuel 1:20

  • Gabriel Apeh Onje for verse 20
It means we should not use our mouth to bring shame upon our selves, family and the church. no body washes hes her dirty pant in the public this means we should protect our image outside and pray for God to interven. Bless You.
  • Bonnie bartlett for verse 20
I agree with the above comments; Our love for one another should be of the love God so loved us,and gave his son for us We should celebrate one another and pray for one another lest the tempter tempt us
  • Sorry I meant like David we should NOT publish it in Gath( to the world)
  • To me it means the church is responsible for protecting the image of other christians when they fall into sin, especially great men of God, if David said such about saul it shows that the church today is a far cry from respecting the Lord's annointed. When a man of God is in trouble why should the church be involved in the Gossip and spreading of the news, even if it is true like David we should publish it in Gath(the world) lest the daughters of the philistines rejoice(unbelievers rejoice).
