Wesley's Notes for 2 Peter 3:5

3:5 For this they are willingly ignorant of - They do not care to know or consider. That by the almighty word of God - Which bounds the duration of all things, so that it cannot be either longer or shorter. Of old - Before the flood. The aerial heavens were, and the earth - Not as it is now, but standing out of the water and in the water - Perhaps the interior globe of earth was fixed in the midst of the great deep, the abyss of water; the shell or exterior globe standing out of the water, covering the great deep. This, or some other great and manifest difference between the original and present constitution of the terraqueous globe, seems then to have been so generally known, that St. Peter charges their ignorance of it totally upon their wilfulness.

People's Bible Notes for 2 Peter 3:5

2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of. Their ignorance which causes them to speak thus is willful. They obstinately forget all the lessons taught by the deluge. There the fixed order was interrupted. That by the word of God. See Ge 1:6,9. The heavens were of old. This alludes to the beginning of creation. See Ge 1:1,2. And the earth standing out of the water. "Compacted out of water" (Revised Version). That is, water is a principal element in its formation, a fact seen in three-fourths of its surface being sea, and water being found in the depths of the earth everywhere, and being found largely in earthly combinations.

Verse 13: We are in desperate need of a new heavens and earth. This is in a figurative sense because we look forward to a new and perfect government and a cleansed earth full of righteous ones.

The message from Peter is the same as that of Jesus: Watch and pray. Obviously, we can't control the elements, but we can hear into understanding and watch into faith, that God is just and his reward is in his hand. This is certain in my life of devotion to God, the King of kings, the Lord of Lords, who has no partners but many Sons, which are those that remain faithful under all conditions!

Alex, dear brother; whether we like to think that "God could never want to destroy the earth, etc." is simply a lack of knowledge of the Word, and of the true character of God, and the condition of this present evil world. All that we see is one day going to be burned up with fervent heat, and all the elements dissolved. He made the world in the beginning out of nothing, and will make a new one!

Imo God is not gonna destroy this beautiful earth with all her oceans and etc. THE new earth and new heaven is TH new CREATURE.The old earth is our evil Adamic nature, thats what he wants to destroy by his JUDGEMENT WHICH IS THE H.G N FIRE BAPTISM, THERE IN NOTHIN WRONG WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL EARTH,Jesus said out of the HEARTS of man proceeds all manner of EVIL.Thus the need for his baptism of FIRE.

A Disciple touches on the important overall message from God regarding 2 Peter 3:7:

3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
