Wesley's Notes for 2 Peter 2:5

2:5 And spared not the old, the antediluvian, world, but he preserved Noah the eighth person - that is, Noah and seven others, a preacher as well as practiser, of righteousness. Bringing a flood on the world of the ungodly - Whose numbers stood them in no stead.

People's Bible Notes for 2 Peter 2:5

2Pe 2:5 And spared not the old world. The case of the antediluvians furnishes the second example of God's swift justice. But saved Noah the eighth [person]. "But preserved Noah with seven others" (Revised Version). God did not then forget the righteous. A preacher of righteousness. By example as well as by word. See Ge 7:1 1Pe 3:20.

2Peter2:12 "natural brute beasts;speak evil of the things they do not understand".I would like to add to my other post. The people this verse is describing are also false "Christians". A false "Christian" is not necessarily one who is a backslider, but one that attends "church" out of tradition of family or for show. One who professes to know God, but doesn't, this person goes after worldly things

I think its important to read the Epistle as a whole, and to consider all its parts in that context. As we read in the first part that we are made partakers of the divine nature and furnished with all we need to overcome and never stumble, when we earnestly and diligently do all the things to ensure and confirm our calling of God; then set next to the kinds of opposition and contradictions of men.

2Peter 2:12 God calls them "natural brute beasts, that were made to be destroyed, speak evil of the things they understand not and shall utterly perish in their own corruption." He is speaking of the unsaved, false teachers/preachers, and those that fall away from grace. They are predestined for destruction=made to be destroyed. Destroyed=eternal torment in hell.

2 Peter 2:20"For if they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled there in, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than that the beginning." Escaped=saved, through the knowledge=saved by grace, through faith, and then are overcome AGAIN by unbelief and sin, they will be worse off than they were before saved.
