Wesley's Notes for 2 Corinthians 5:17

5:17 Therefore if any one be in Christ - A true believer in him. There is a new creation - Only the power that makes a world can make a Christian. And when he is so created, the old things are passed away - Of their own accord, even as snow in spring. Behold - The present, visible, undeniable change! All things are become new - He has new life, new senses, new faculties, new affections, new appetites, new ideas and conceptions. His whole tenor of action and conversation is new, and he lives, as it were, in a new world. God, men, the whole creation, heaven, earth, and all therein, appear in a new light, and stand related to him in a new manner, since he was created anew in Christ Jesus.

People's Bible Notes for 2 Corinthians 5:17

2Co 5:17 If any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature. Because, crucified with Christ, buried into his death, we have died with Christ, and risen to walk in a new life (Ro 6:6,4,14). Born anew, we are new creatures who must live a new life. Old things are passed away. The old life ended when we died and were buried. All things have become new. The affections, the motives, the thoughts, the hopes, the whole life.

Discussion for 2 Corinthians 5:17

  • We are given a totally new person upon acceptance of Christ who is totally separate from the old person of the carnal world. He, the new person, must be fed with the Word of Life so he will be made strong. The new person in Christ will then become strong and will overpower the old person by starvation. The spirit is 'dead ' before accepting Christ and our Savior brings the new person with Him at rebirth 'as a babe ' in Him. We now have a trinity and are one 'spirit, soul, and body in Jesus. Truly, the old man is starved to death and the New man ,who is raised by the Lord and nourished buy the Word is now in power within us. Nothing we have done does this but Jesus who we invited in at the day of our salvation.
  • I believe that it is an amazing word. It is part of a promise that requires action spiritually on our part while living in the world. It is a wonderful thing to know that if we "BE OF CHRIST " we are promised to become new creatures and basically forgiven of our old selves and by HIS will accept the things that can become new. I love the Lord so much and this scripture is just another reason to continue to trust HIM even more! It is strength! and I will, we all should continue to trust in HIM! I am glad that he is a forgiving God! An understanding God! A merciful God! The fact that we are not worthy we are still given grace. hallelujah!

even though i try to live right as a believer my negative past sometimes shows up and i kind of want to question my personality in Christ but over the time with 2Cor 5:17 i have come to clearly understand that it is all about Christ in me.i am not the same person i was yesterday. i have a new personality and it changes everything. thanks to Jesus
  • Anthony for verse 17
The church is full of "christians " who have no idea who God is, what Jesus did for us, or what the Bible says. Studying the Bible allows God to reach in and touch us in that special place where only He can go. Our soul. And that is where the peace that surpasses human understanding comes from. This deep level of love cannot be explained.
