In my opinion as stated in the word a Bishop should live a life of example which reflects on the word of God and his office

how can you rule the house of God when your life in or outside of the church is Mess. The word is directing you to the home and Marriage and your Kids to be raised in the nurturing of the lord not lifted up in pride or double tongue and you should be serious at all times as a True Solider in the Lord

The scripture is clear that if a man cannot manage his own family, he is not to manage the Household of Faith. The Lord will forgive a divorced person, but ministry is not for him. A support group for overcoming divorce is better, where you can share your experience with others who have divorced, and grow in your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In verse 15,it's talking about the real name of the church, the Church of God..this is the truth. When will people realize that Church of God is the truth?it is 13times that church of god is mentioned from the bible.
  • Grace on 1 Timothy 3 - 10 years ago
This is an exhortation to leaders in the church to let their lives be more than an example in all ramifications and also and also not to be ignorant of the devices of the devil as all he cares about is deterring people from getting into the Kingdom of God
  • BSP on 1 Timothy 3:7 - 10 years ago
One who presides over a congregation should have not only a good reputation inside the church, but also outside of it. This shows that his whole life should be a reflection of his devotion to God in all that he does. There should not be a whole separate double life being led outside the church.

Disputing 1 Tim 3:16 is an evidence of the strtgles that started between Sarah's son (Isaace) & Hagar's Son (Ishmeal). Jesus said that he is God - Mat 18: 20- claims to be Present everywhere, John 10 :30-33 - He is one with the Father; therefore he is God. John 14 :7-11 - To see & to know Him is to See & know the Father. John 10 :5-8- He uses the title ' I AM via Ex 3: 14. He clain to be King and final JUGDE Mt 25 vs 31 -46

I believe 1Timothy 3:16 as "G-d revealed in the flesh. eg. Isaiah 9:6 where Jesus is referred to as the "Mighty G-d", Revelation1:8 Jesus is the Alpha & Omega,(The first and the Last) which can only applied to the Almighty G-d. and the "Almighty G-d" in the same verse is applied to Jesus. See also Genesis Chapter 18 where one of the three men is Jehovah.C/F John 4:24;5:37; Coll. 2:8-9
    Good for discussion.

For the person who wrote "who", what do you do with Isaiah 9:6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be on his shoulder and his name shall called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Almighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Paul, is simply giving instruction to those who desire to be leaders in the church; What you must have and what you must do;....... An important book to those desiring a higher calling in their lives.
Let us all read daily and more often; God's word so that we gain more knowledge of his desire, for us to do, and walk in the way he wants us to live; so that we bless everyone who is watching us remain faithful, in doing God's will, without fail; So that they who are wacthing, be incourage to remain faithful after us; who truly Love God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength.

  • Joe on 1 Timothy 3:2 - 10 years ago
The one part of this scripture I would like to discuss is the husband of one wife. Many pastors and baptist missions board hang their hat on this one scripture when it comes to invalidating a man's ability to be a pastor of a church or be a missionary. The only requirement is that "he" be married to only one woman. The reverse is not true because the scripture does not include "the wife of this bishop can only ever been married to this bishop..." To be in a position to be called of God into the pastoralship should be allowed even if a man marries a woman who was married previously. If he has only been married this once and will only be married this once then he should be able to follow his call of God to serve as a pastor or missionary. In my continued reading I have not found scripture that would make me think otherwise of a wife of a bishop should never have been married before.

    @Deniece,
The 2nd verse says a bishop should be the husband of one wife, as well a deacon the husband of one wife. However it did not say a bishop should be the wife of one husband or a deacon the wife of one husband.. I believe that God wants us as women to teach younger women how to be godly and so that is one that I believe is the ministry of a woman. We as women have our place in the home raising the children and keeping them quiet as our men study the word to give to the church. Women tend to get aggravated more easily than men and we blow things all out of proportion, whereas men dont get as emotional when situations come up in the church. We are ministers but we dont need to be on a pulpit to do that. I've seen a lot of churches torn up behind women. I feel we should sit back and let the man do this job and we do give them the support they need to get it done, because we cant take being talked about and lied on like a man can.

While he was examining the Alexandrine Manuscript in London (a Greek manuscript dating from the fifth centuryC.E., which contains most of the Bible), Wetstein made a startling discovery. Up till that time, according to the King James Version (1611), 1Timothy 3:16 was rendered: God was manifest in the flesh. This rendering was reflected in most other Bibles in use.
However, Wetstein noticed that the Greek word translated God, which was abbreviated to ΘC, had originally looked like the Greek word OC, which means who. But a horizontal stroke showing through faintly from the other side of the vellum page, and the addition by a later hand of a line across the top, had turned the word OC (who) into the contraction ΘC (God)

Surely we have to believe that with the gravity of the consequences for believing or not believing that the bible is the unadulterated unfalable word of God. God inspired these men and they were only holding the pen. Now if we have such a problem of believing that, what are we going to believe about a virgin birth. God help us to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for knowledge and wisdom and diliver us from our carnal thinking.

    surely

I believe with all of my heart and sole in GOD the father and Jesuse Christ the son our Savor,I believe in there teaching's and that through the years man has not had the gumpshon to change the word's from God or Jesus. But I also believe that Paul and timothy and all of the other's (men) have worded the bible to reflect there feeling's as to the way they want certain thing's to be. Man instinsintevly want's to be in total control and his Wife to remain silent. I believe God created us all equeal to teach one another for his Glory. To Love, have faith, foregiveness, and Mercy for his Glory. To be clean and reverent and do good for all men, women, and children. To WOSHIP one GOD and one GOD only the true GOD our father witch art in heaven. GOD BLESS

Dear br.Jeff may lord Jesus bless you I enjoyed reading your comment that is the only truth all human beings has to believe"God is manifest in the flesh"
  • Jeff davis on 1 Timothy 3 - 12 years ago
Again,I'd like to say,the trinity is NOT in the bible,so how can God and Jesus be the same in mankind? God is a Spirit, made Himself flesh( John 1:14)and dewelt among us(man).Look at verse 3:16,no one or no thing has ever done what God can do!God was manifest in the flesh, that's all Jesus!!Do you know of any other god that is alive?I know one,Jesus, name another god...I know not any- Isaiah 43:11"I,even I,am the Lord:and beside Me there is no savior.Jesus is God!!!My sheep know my voice, and they follow me--can you here the word of God?Read Acts2:38&39 and then follow Jesus for salvation, there's no other way,He is God!Read all of Acts, all the baptizum's are there,No-One was ever baptized,"father, son and the holy spirit!
  • Tumelo on 1 Timothy 3 - 12 years ago
If we are Christian we must take the Bible as is, no matter how harsh: 1 Timothy 2:11-14; 11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression".

I am a woman myself, but I take the Scripture as it is, there is no "sexism" in the Bible, God loves us all equally. If He says NO, who can say YES! Who are we to stand against God. If you don't understand the Bible rather ask the Holy Spirit, he will reveal what you need to know!
  • Charlie on 1 Timothy 3 - 12 years ago
women can't be a deacon either. vs 11 deacon's "wives must be sober...etc, vs 12 the "husband of one wife"...
  • Elliott on 1 Timothy 3 - 12 years ago
Terri, it's not just that women can't be pastors or bishops, it states clearly in several places that women are not to teach men. They can teach the younger women to be sober, love their husbands, love and train their children, but is that what Joyce Meyers teaches? Paul states in another place that a woman is to be silent in the church. If she wants to know something, to ask her husband at home. Where is Mr. Meyers? I will again reiterate that women have as high a place as men in the sight of God. He is not sexist, He created different roles.
  • Dan on 1 Timothy 3 - 12 years ago
I would suggest that the Bible clearly lays out male leadership in the church. This is not degrading to women in the least. God created men/women equal in that both are made in God's image and of the same essence, but each has a different role. Just as the Trinity submits to Itself. Jesus Christ, Who is God, submits to God the Father. Does this mean Christ is any less God than the Father? No, it means that Christ has willingly submitted Himself to the Father because that is His role in the Trinity. I understand men/women to be models of that. The church has specific roles laid out. The men are to be the church leaders. Doesn't mean they are any more special; in fact, leaders are often held to a higher and more stringent standard than others.

As to requiring only a single marriage at any given time, this doesn't flow with what Paul later says about remarriage. Certainly it includes monogamy because this is how God intended for marriage to be. A man who has multiple wives is in sin and is restricted from leading a church.

Paul does say quite clearly that women are not to be leaders in the church and have authority over men in the church. That's simply how God set it up. Women can be deacons and give advice and serve very affectively, but the office of elder/bishop/pastor (all meaning the same thing) are purely restricted to Godly men who are capable of teaching.

And I would be careful calling God's plan "sexist". If you understand God's roles for men/women, men are servants to women, not lords who rule them. A man should always be placing his wife's happiness above his own and doing whatever he can to serve and minister to her. I find that to be somewhat of a "lacky" role when I as a man have to serve my wife as Christ has served the church. But it is an honor to model Christ's love for us through love for a spouse.
  • Jeff on 1 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
@Ussarn, while I understand what you say I still find it sexist. Is not a man and women equal? Why should, the woman take on the lacky role?
  • Denise on 1 Timothy 3 - 13 years ago
If a man an woman pastor a church and they both been married before , does that make it ok to go ahead to pastor a church ? Paul stated that they should only be married once to pastor a church . What about someone that is a christain that has been married more than once ? Arn't we saved by grace ( faith ). I know there are some people that marry like opening and shuting the door but there is some that love God with all there heart and have been married more than once because of bad choices they can't go back only forward. All I know God is the best !
