This does and doesn't have to do with this chap. This is a short quote by Tyrone Edwards (1809-1894). quote: "The highest attainment of the spiritual life, is to be able at all times and in all things to say, "thy will be done." That's what "Amen" means. We say it SO OFTEN - without even thinking about what we are saying. God's answer may be just opposite of our prayer. Father knows best ........

Verse 2 gives good advice regarding making a budget and regarding our donations we may give. It's good to take care of these things first and then any that we may have left over can be used for other purposes.

"Anathema" in v. 22: The Analytical Greek Lexicon, shows this word as a compound word; "Ana" and "Thema." The definition for Ana is :Through the midst of; (thoroughly) and "Thema" means to lay a foundation for faith and doctrine, a form of which is translated to "Other foundation can no man lay...than Jesus Christ" in 1 Cor. 3:11. Let's help the erring, not curse them.

The NT is translated from the Greek and the word Pentecost literally means "50th day". It is the Biblical Jewish "feast (festival) of weeks"(Shavuot) ( Ex. 34:22) to celebrate the completion of wheat harvest.(50th day after Passover). The Holy Spirit came on this day.( Acts 2:1) So Paul in 1 Cor. 16:8, was speaking of the Jewish festival not the day the Holy Spirit came. (See Blue letter Bible)

JR, Acts 20:16"For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost."
Scripture says he was converted before Pentecost. Believe God's word.
  • JR on 1 Corinthians 16 - 8 years ago
Cor. 16:8 - but I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. I thought Pentecost happened years before Paul's conversion, and before Corinthians was written. Here in Corinthians, which Paul wrote, this statement occurs pertaining to tarrying at Ephesus until Pentecost.

    Any care to elaborate?

Anathema:Cursed Maranatha:The Lord Cometh We are in this world but not of this world John 11:25 He that believes in Christ although we were dead yet shall we live. John 16:16 He that believeth on me and is baptized holy ghost the same shall be saved and he that believeth not shall be damned cursed Even though we cannot see a visible Jesus Christ we must believe through faith that he was, he is and he forever shall be, otherwise we 've cursed ourselves because we don 't believe!!!

Jesus is guiding us to the Living Water the word of God as many of us who were lost and our love was separated from God because of our sins. but thanks to Jesus for sheding his blood to us we are now pardoned and redeemed by his blood. All we need to do is to believe his words and accept his words and obey them until rapture. Lean not with your own understanding us God 's ways and his thoughts are higher than our ways and thoughts. Jesus loves you and He will be a good Shephered to us all the time. amen

Niles: I don 't see how this can be considered a corruption of the text or meaning. If the word should have been written as two separate words? The meaning remains the same. separated from . I personally think it means separated from the believers as that person would be considered already separated from Christ. just my2cts.
  • NILES JOHANSON on 1 Corinthians 16:22 - 9 years ago
Well, my wife Greek Cypriot says she thinks it is a corrupted translation. In her Greek bible "maranatha " but in greek alphabet is given as two separate words: maran atha, which she says means separated from. So to her mind the verse means "let him be cursed and separated from the Lord .

Rita, I believe you will need to consult God and His Holy Spirit guidance on this subject because there is no scripture in the bible that I know of that directly address this issue. We are aware of the old proverb that charity or love should began at home.

1Cor. 16:1-8 Sum 25 years after the cross Paul is on a onetime welfare trip to Jerusalem for the poor saints in Jerusalem. This seems to be a onetime gathering of goods by each individual. Not a church service. This had nothing to do with the weekly tithe.
God's first day of the week is from sunset Saturday to sunset Sunday. Acts 20:7 was most probably on Saturday evening.
God's word never refers to the first day of the week as the Lord's Day. Lord's Day can only be found in Rev. 1:10
God never instructed man to abolish His Holy Sabbath.

1 Corinthians 16:1, 2, coming to Poverty or prosperity, and your choice, Far too long the Devil has told us this lie: some people are destined to be poor, and some people are destined to be rich, and theres nothing you can do about it. It is a lie because Acts 10:34 says God is not respecter of persons. And 3 John 2 says Gods desire is that you prosper. Deuteronomy 8:18 says God has given you the power to get wealth. God would not give you the power to get wealth if He did not intend you to use that power and become wealthy. Your current financial condition is determined by your past obedience in giving. Your future financial conditions will be determined by your obedience today. Genesis 8:22 says Seedtime and harvest as long as the earth remained. Dont eat the seed. If you eat a seed in an apple, the seed taste bad. God is teaching us not to eat the seed but to plant it. Saints Quit tipping God.

I can see how much we are to love each other, and to be helpful to each other. Jesus is love, the Father God is love, the holy spirit is love. I say to myself how can I go off Gods path if I walk in love, have a forgiving heart and read the Bible. For it will wash my mind. Faith, hope and love, the big one is love. God bless all of you.
  • Ben weaver on 1 Corinthians 16:22 - 13 years ago
Since cursing those who err does not seem to fit the new testament gospel, I have attempted to find another interpretation. In the Analytical Gr. Lexicon, Anathema leads to anatithema. Under this word, ana-thema is shown as a compound word. The Gr. "ana" is defined as :through the midst of: ie.throughly or thoroughly. Themelios a relative of "thema" is defined as :to lay a foundation:. In 1 Cor. 3:10, Paul says "I have laid the foundation". The word for foundation is themelion. Maybe a better wording for 1 Cor. 16:22 and Gal. 1:8 would be to thoroughly teach those who err in order to lay a true foundation for faith and doctrine. We are to bless and not curse.
