You can get many views on this matter, so you need to read the portion you have quoted, as well as 1 Cor 11:3 onwards (specifically on the relationship between the Godhead and mankind). Bearing in mind also that women played a very important part in the Church & most definitely as mothers in raising godly children (e.g. Timothy). Based on what the Scriptures say on this subject & without any further details elsewhere, it seems that apostle Paul does require the silence of women in the Church in regards to teaching. Of course, to sing and pray is allowed, but teaching is the responsibility of men. I know women now pastor & lead & blessings have flowed; but there is a biblical warrant here.

I am responding to the coments:"1Cor14 is all about spiritual gifts...." No, it is not. Paul is begging the church to follow that which is important: brotherly love, ie. the love of God and Unity. Am I to be so dotrinically correct and rigid that I forsake the commandments that Jesus left us with; to love the Lord my God and my brother as well. Self indulgence mascarading as correcting an error of doctrine is Satan's favorite trick. Why do I always have a comment and an opinion that MUST BE HEARD about everything? Especially something controversial like speaking it toungues. I am here to proclaim: "cut that off, grow this out, stop doing this, start doing that.." pride. 4bid not amen

Glen, To love is the fruit of the spirit and also the fulfillment of the law... The gifts of the spirits are gifts given to us free and everyone regardless... There are those who believe the gifts have ceased.. Citing some references. It's arguable.

The main point is that the gifts are for building of the church... And the church is still work in progress so how do the gifts cease.. The adversary is still much more active than before so how and why should the gifts cease.. We need it more that ever for the battle ahead...
  • Michael on 1 Corinthians 14 - 4 years ago
Praise the Lord... We are on the same side. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are to be enjoyed. Although there are those who don't believe in that and therefore do not participate in its goodness... It doesn't stop Yeshshua to bless his people
  • Michael on 1 Corinthians 14 - 4 years ago
The whole idea that women were not to speak in church has been very controversial since the early church.

The truth is that Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ didn't forbid anyone not to teach whether male or female.. Factually more women ministered to Jesus than men did.. And there are so many examples of women teaching in the new testament..

So what my understanding is that this instruction was to a particular church which had a problem with women with "loud mouth" and orderliness..
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 14:39 - 4 years ago
Of course, you're correct. However, when some speak against such manifestations of spiritual gifts, they see how it is being done outside of Biblical instruction. The chapter you quote, is filled with instruction on its permitted use. And if there is no one to interpret when a tongue is given, then he should remain silent; for the gift is given so an unbeliever has a sign from God that an unlearned language is spoken (maybe God is giving him a Word), and to the believer, the translated message from that tongue will be for mutual edification. Outside these guidelines, the gift of tongues becomes pointless and of little use in the Church.
  • St Francis on 1 Corinthians 14:39 - 4 years ago
1Cor 14:39 is clear: "....forbid not to speak in toungues." So we have nothing to say about it being past away, wrong, bad, good, or whatever; we simply "forbid not."

Can someone shed light on verses 34-35? Is there somewhere else in KJV that indicates women can preach/teach in church? We had a visiting pastor who indicated women could preach/teach in the church but was not able to give scripture at the time. I've searched and found that women could be messengers outside of the church. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. May God bless and keep all my sisters and brothers is my prayer. Amen.

My thoughts are so unimaginable about the gifts of the spirit, but I speak in my heavenly language and pray for understanding to edify the church, and not myself for thing to be decent and in order, this chapter has been a true enlightenment for my life in following the commandments from the Lord. Praise be unto God! amen

ACTS 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel 1 Corithians 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Acts 3:8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and LEAPING, and praising God. ACTS 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

Why is there so much lack of understanding concerning the gift of tongues, yes I have been Baptist in the spirit with the evidence of tongues. but let me tell you that you should ask THE MIGHTY ONE for the gift of love if He gives you the gift of love He will throw in the gift of tongues for free I have been near people with the gift of love and I will confess I am jealous
  • Glenn Edward Roberts on 1 Corinthians 14 - 4 years ago
Christ spoke to us in earthly terms, and we do not understand everything He said,if He had spoken to us in heavenly terms surely we would not have understudy Him at all. We are looking through a dark glass. Can anyone tell me how great God is.He has great things in store for us. God is love, the spirt of love is the strongest spirt if we could learn how to love one another He would open our eyes
  • Glenn Edward Roberts on 1 Corinthians 14 - 4 years ago
Love will not fail, tongues will fail, knowledge will fail ,prophecies will fail THE MIGHTY ONE is so much greater than our self everything that we know about Him will fail, Salvation is free the law of God is the law we are little children set free of the penalties of the law run in the streets and act crazy if you want to,be slain in the spirt if you want to,or conduct your self with order

Rejoice in the lord always. Again I say rejoice. How different we are yet the same. What is to prophecy? The scriptures are a prophecy If we are in the word we are in the prophecy! The will of God is prophetic. Don't frustrate the spirit with questions or judging others. When we are in the spirit of Christ we will do his will, and influence and help others. Be ready to give and receive!

2 samuel 6:14 15 14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. This is not directly, but music makes people move. Think of a concert people are dancing outrageous so you have to use your imagination of their dancing.

I will search the bible for an answer to your question. My thoughts: The holy spirit works in many ways and affects people differently. We can give God praise by singing, bowing down, praying, lifting up hands or just being still. You never know where someone is in terms of their relationship with God so the question about jumping around is an expression when the holy spirit comes upon you.

Can anyone show me scripture in the New Testament where people ran the isles were slain in the spirit danced about did flips over into the baptistery spoke in unintelligible tongues and called this the move of the Holy Spirit. Please help me and show me where any of the aforementioned was ever demonstrated. If you have all going on how can you possibly learn anything of the word of God.

for Verse 35: In my christian walk, i've heard it explained that the women were disrupting the service and Paul was addressing order. My personal view is that it may have been a cultural thing...not sure and i don't rely on commentaries!

..., it was the Mosaic Law that was naild to the cross, not The 10 Commandments. Remember, The 10 Commandments were placed inside the Arc of The Covenant. The Mosaic Law was placed beside the Arc so people would be reminded they were not in line with God.
  • Stuart on 1 Corinthians 14 - 5 years ago
God declares clearly that sin is the transgression of the law; The 10 Commandments. Jesus said if you love me you will obey my commandments; again The 10 Commandments. The Mosaic Covenant, those other 600 plus laws/ commands God had Moses write down, the "handwriting of ordinances" that Jesus told the religious leaders were a burden on the people that even they, the leaders, could not keep; those

The law of God shows us the Character of God. But what then is sin? 1st John 3:4 whosoever commitieth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law— what is in fact then the law of God? Let’s ratther speak of the covenant of God that he made with the children of Israel in the Old Testament and now spiritual Israel in the new! Deut:4:13
    And now Jerimiah 31:31-34

Luke 16:17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. John 7:49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
