You're correct. But that was under the old covenant when the Spirit of God was given in measure & for specific reasons.

Under the new covenant, the Spirit is received as soon as the new birth occurs for it's the Spirit Himself Who administers the Gift, sealing the believer. If this were not to happen, then we would have a situation where we have a 'Christian' who is one without the Holy Spirit, & that would be impossible.
  • Starbux on 1 Corinthians 12 - 3 years ago
Jesus spoke in Luke 11:13: "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him"? It's not automatically given.
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 12:7 - 3 years ago
I think it would be safe to say that God created not only the heavens & the earth, but all the elements required to make them up & bring them into existence. If that were not so, then the question: who created the elements? Which is a question even the evolutionists cannot answer. Matter can never just come into existence out of nothing, even by chance - all things visible & invisible demand a creator. But our friends on the other side of the fence wouldn't want to face that issue - all they can do is try to deny God's existence so as to create doubt in the Truth of the Bible & of Creation.
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 12:7 - 3 years ago
That is very true, Jerry. And that portion goes on to say in the next verses, how the Church also would profit/benefit from the ministry of the Holy Spirit to them as a whole - the Body of Christ.
  • Jerry on 1 Corinthians 12:7 - 3 years ago
This verse means that the holy ghost is given to everyman so all can profit from it, not financially but spiritually.

Everyone is important in the body of Christ just like the real body. No one should get stuck on a title. I am curious why the African-American church clamor for titles of Apostles, Bishops and Prophets more than other denominations. True men and women would be humble like those in the bible. Sometimes people can be become too deep waiting con false prophecy. We need to go back to the old path of charity and love for each other which is the bestgift. People are searching for genuine love and relationships rather than just cold revelations. Amen. Let's be real. With loving kindness have I drawn thee. Showing compassion first draws people over trying to vague prophecies.
  • Albert on 1 Corinthians 12 - 3 years ago
I am so grateful that we are in one body. And as such, we each have a part in serving our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul has done an excellent job of explaining the spritual gifts that are active in the church. Each gift is for the edification of the Body of Christ.
  • Joe - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 12 - 3 years ago
Well said Chris. I would like to add - work together for the good of the church & the glory of God. As Chris said, everyone has something unique to offer.
  • Chris - In Reply on 1 Corinthians 12:8 - 3 years ago
Teboho, I see that both these accounts, referring to Spiritual Gifts, as complementing each other. I don't think that we should necessarily look at these lists from the apostle, as exhaustive. They may well be other gifts that have not been specifically mentioned. But what is evident, is that God wants His Church to be well equipped in serving each other, for the building up in our faith & blessing of each other. After all, we are a community within a community & just as parents give all due care & instruction to their children, so the Church, with its members so gifted, should also use those gifts for the building up of one another in love. It may be true that certain gifts may not be seen or even necessary in a fellowship today, but the Spirit does give each one a gift to be used to edify the Body.

You may, or may not have, a gift from the Spirit that is listed there. It may be something very unique, just as each one of us is unique in Christ. The important part is that the person with the gift or position is not elevated (as was being done in Corinth, 1 Cor 3:4), but rather that the Church grow & the gift in that person be exercised. How do we know our gift? It won't come as a letter from Heaven but most likely as we walk with the Lord & are active in our Fellowship, we will sense our special God-given abilities, our direction, our joy in service even when it gets demanding, because we will know that this is the Lord's doing & enabling & blessing to the Church must be the result.
  • Teboho on 1 Corinthians 12:8 - 3 years ago
What is the difference in the spiritual gifts we see in chapter 12 of the book of Roman's and chapter 12 of the book of 1 Corinthians. Is correct to say there are 15 spiritual gifts and that each one of us is gifted in one of these areas?

    God bless

In the world we will have tribulation. Christ has overcome the world. where is the temple of Christ ,but in the world! We are his workmanship in him! we are all different but yet in one body. Christ is all in all.,he has fulfilled all of Gods law. He is our perfect sacrifice. Without controversy great is the mystery of Godliness! In him we live ,move and have our being. Faith in Him is our sword!
  • Vanessa on 1 Corinthians 12 - 5 years ago
We are all parts of Christ Jesus and we should come together as one body on one accord to do one job serve god.
  • Deborah on 1 Corinthians 12 - 5 years ago
Every word that proceeds from Our Father though Christ, our Savior, Redeemer, Counselor and Savior cannot impregnate a heart other than one chosen by our Lord.
How beautifully synchronized His timing is, for us, the meeting of persons He brings into our path. Each ordained by His Spirit for His Holiness, or, for a test of our discernment abilities.
    ONLY YOU ARE WORTHY GOD
    Bless Israel, Lord.

A BIRTH ALWAYS IMPLIES A CHILD CONCEPTION ETC,THE NEW BIRTH IMPLIES A HEAVENLY CHILD WHICH IS THE H.G. the born again believer is neither Greek nor Jew we are the born again and we dwell in the house of our Father. We are those to whom "from before the beginning of time" refers and our place is determined by Believing on the name of Jesus. Once we answered that knock and let Jesus enter " It is not I that liveth but Christ that liveth in me" and we can no live by man's dogma but by His Word.
  • Dennis Hauze on 1 Corinthians 12 - 5 years ago
It seems to me that 1 Cor Ch 12; presents a challenge in that it makes adherence to the teachings of the Savior, as written in the Holy Bible, and acceptance of his sacrifice, the only relevant points to which we need to hold true. Also, makes the claims of some organized religions, to be the only "way" to salvation, and their Doctrines and dogma questionable, if not dangerous. Your thoughts?

Verse 25~We need mutual concern for one another. Literally the Greek says “to be anxious over one another.”

Verses 14-18~In Jehovah God's organization each of the members have a different ministry. There should be no division in the body, it cooperates as each member performs his or her part.

Alex; I'm only writing in response to that you twist my words, as you twist the Lord's words. Yes, the Holy Spirit is a divine person, and one with the the Father and the Son; I never intimated otherwise. No, we do not conceive the Holy Spirit; but He is sent from above into the hearts of those that ask in faith, and those that obey. He is not the new Son begotten in us, but the Paraclete to help.

Alex; Where do you get such unscriptural strange ideas? The Holy Ghost (notice carefully I don't abbreviate!) is the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ which is given into our hearts as an earnest or token of the Promise of our inheritance in the world to come; and for sanctifying and teaching us; and for using us to convict and teach the world about Christ. NOT TO REPLACE JEWS OR CHRISTIANS!
  • Alex on 1 Corinthians 12 - 6 years ago

We are reminded of the diversity of gifts and roles. We should covet earnestly the best gifts through supplication to God.
