Wesley's Notes for 1 Corinthians 14:22

14:22 Tongues are intended for a sign to unbelievers - To engage their attention, and convince them the message is of God. Whereas prophecy is not so much for unbelievers, as for the confirmation of them that already believe.

Discussion for 1 Corinthians 14:22

  • a little bit confusing in terms of understanding
  • Samuel Semmens for verse 22
God the person of the Holy Ghost does not work contradictory to himself. He together with the other persons of the Godhead inspired the writing of the word of God that includes the grammar of the original Greek. The point being that he will not get us to do anything that contradicts his written word. We do not go by feelings, voices, or rapping tables, but by the Word of God alone and in context.
  • Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, In light of this verse 22. Why would you be speaking in tongues which are a language by the way, in front of believers. Why don 't you get out on the street and preach in jibber jabber and see how many lost souls you reach. You would be as a barbarian and people would know you are mad.
  • Ben Weaver for verse 22
While being cautious and skeptical, I have witnessed in close Christian friends and become convinced that God's Spirit manifests himself today where believers are open to him. I feel that the "unlearned and unbelievers" in this verse, applies to the area of spiritual gifts, rather than to the gospel in general. The following verse indicates that they do attend Christian meetings, but are new to Holy Spirit manifestations. When I heard a message in tongues, through a close friend, at a prayer breakfast, it was certainly a sign to supernatural activity. The prayerful atmosphere was not favorable for enemy involvment. A beautiful interpretation followed by another friend who was given only three words at a time. Please study the passage following v.22 for a discription. Maybe we need to seek God beyond our intelect; He is alive and more than just a belief system.
