Re 17:18 The woman . . . is that great city. The city named in Re 16:19. See PNT "Re 16:19".

What has the makings of a great city? What city would you consider the greatest on earth? Seems these days nearly everyone is more ready to pass the buck, but not the book.

It never ceases to amaze me how we try to make excuses for America and paint her this great bastion of virtue leading the rest of us heathens to God. This we do despite the fact that America placing itself above God. Intimidating it citizens into abandoning the Word of God in deference to a culture of political correctness. Hence we make Mystery to be some other place other than the obvious. Know for sure that when the writer penned this prophecy, Babylon had already given way to the Medes et al as rulers of the Earth. We cannot understand fully this Mystery Babylon (which will be violently overthrown either by some cataclysmic event or some man-made disaster such as a nuclear attack) unless we compare this with some current city. The prophecies about Mystery Babylon are yet to be fulfilled. Here are five (5) criteria it seems Mystery Babylon must meet: (1) The world’s best known city in its day, (2) The world’s most sought after destination for tourist travel, (3) The financial center of the world, (4) The center of world trade and economic activities, and (5) the political and social center of planet Earth. If there is any city on the Planet today that meets those criteria, that should be the number one candidate to wear the title: Mystery Babylon, the Mother of Harlots.

It's obvious that the Persian Gulf is referenced as the great whore, as ancient cities of Babylon were named for Ishtar and other false gods. She was thrown into a bed and burnt with fire, just as it happened in the desert storm war.
