CHAP. XXXI.
1 The Midianites are spoyled, and Balaam slaine. 13 Moses is wroth with the officers, for sauing the women aliue. 19 How the souldiers with their captiues and spoile, are to be purified. 25 The proportion whereby the pray is to be diuided. 48 The voluntary oblation vnto the Treasury of the Lord.
1 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
2 Auenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered vnto thy people.2
4 Of euery tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the warre.4
7 And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they slew all the males.
8 And they slew the Kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slaine; namely Eui, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, fiue Kings of Midian; Balaam also the sonne of Beor they slew with the sword.8
10 And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles with fire:
11 And they tooke all the spoile, and all the pray, both of men and of beasts.
14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the hoste, with the captaines ouer thousands, and captaines ouer hundreds, which came from the battel.14
15 And Moses said vnto them, Haue ye saued all the women aliue?
16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsell of Balaam, to commit trespasse against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the Congregation of the Lord.16
17 Now therefore kill euery male among the little ones, and kill euery woman that hath knowen man, by lying with him.17
19 And doe yee abide without the campe seuen dayes: whosoeuer hath killed any person, and whosoeuer hath touched any slaine, purifie both your selues, and your captiues, on the third day, and on the seuenth day.19
20 And purifie all your raiment, and all that is made of skinnes, and all worke of goates haire, and all things made of wood.20
22 Onely the gold, and the siluer, the brasse, the yron, the tinne, and the lead,
25 ¶ And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
26 Take the summe of the pray, that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou and Eleazar the Priest, and the chiefe fathers of the Congregation:26
29 Take it of their halfe, and giue it vnto Eleazar the Priest, for an heaue offering of the Lord.
30 And of the children of Israels halfe, thou shalt take one portion of fiftie, of the persons, of the beeues, of the asses, and of the flockes, of all maner of beasts, and giue them vnto the Leuites, which keepe the charge of the Tabernacle of the Lord.30
31 And Moses and Eleazar the Priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
33 And threescore and twelue thousand beeues,
34 And threescore and one thousand asses:
35 And thirtie and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not knowen man by lying with him.
37 And the Lords tribute of the sheepe was sixe hundred and threescore and fifteene.
38 And the beeues were thirtie and sixe thousand, of which the Lords tribute was threescore and twelue.
40 And the persons were sixteene thousand, of which the Lords tribute was thirtie and two persons.
42 And of the children of Israels halfe, which Moses diuided from the men that warred:
44 And thirtie and sixe thousand beeues:
45 And thirtie thousand asses, and fiue hundred:
46 And sixteene thousand persons)
49 And they said vnto Moses, Thy seruants haue taken the summe of the men of warre which are vnder our charge, and there lacketh not one man of vs.49
The request of Reuben and Gad.
50 Wee haue therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what euerie man hath gotten, of iewels of golde chaines, and bracelets, rings, earerings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our soules before the Lord.50
51 And Moses and Eleazar the Priest tooke the gold of them: euen all wrought iewels.
52 And all the gold of the offring that they offered vp to the Lord, of the captaines of thousands, and of the captaines of hundreds, was sixteene thousand, seuen hundred and fiftie shekels.52
53 (For the men of warre had taken spoile, euery man for himselfe.)

31:3 Avenge ye the Lord - For the affront which they offered to God, by their own idolatry and lewdness, and by seducing God's people into rebellion against him. God's great care was to avenge the Israelites, #Nu 31:2|, and Moses's chief desire was to avenge God rather than himself or the people.
31:5 Twelve thousand - God would send no more, though it is apparent the Midianites were numerous and strong, because he would exercise their trust in him, and give them an earnest of their Canaanitish conquests.
31:6 Them and Phinehas - Who had the charge not of the army, as general, (an office never committed to a priest in all the Old Testament) but of the holy instruments, and was sent to encourage, and quicken, them in their enterprize. The holy instruments - The holy breast - plate, wherein was the Urim and Thummim, which was easily carried, and very useful in war upon many emergent occasions.
31:7 All the males - Namely all who lived in those parts, for colonies of them, were sent forth to remoter places, which therefore had no hand either in their former sin, or in this present ruling. And herein they did according to God's own order concerning such people, #Deu 20:13|, only their fault was, that they did not consider the special reason which they had to involve the women in the destruction.
31:13 Without the camp - Partly to put respect upon them, and congratulate with them for their happy success; and partly to prevent the pollution of the camp by the untimely entrance of the warriors into it.
31:17 The little ones - Which they were forbidden to do to other people, #Deu 20:14|, except the Canaanites, to whom this people had equaled themselves by their horrid crimes, and therefore it is not strange, nor unjust, that God, the supreme Lord of all mens lives, who as he gives them, so may take them away when he pleaseth, did equal them in the punishment. Every woman - Partly for punishment, because the guilt was general, and though some of them only did prostitute themselves to the Israelites, yet the rest made themselves accessary by their consent or approbation; and partly, for prevention of the like mischief from such an adulterous generation.
31:20 Your raiment - Namely, your spoil and prey. All work - All which had contracted some ceremonial uncleanness either from the dead bodies which wore them, or the tents or houses where they were, in which such dead bodies lay, or from the touch of the Israelitish soldiers, who were legally defiled by the slaughters they made.
31:27 Two parts - The congregation hath some share, because the warriors went in the name of all, and because all having been injured by the Midianites, all were to have some share in the reparations: but the warriors who were but 12000, have a far greater share than their brethren, because they underwent greater pains and dangers.
31:29 An heave - offering - In thankfulness to God for their preservation and good success.
31:30 One of fifty - Whereas the former part was one of five hundred; the reason of the difference is, partly, because this was taken out of the peoples portion, whose hazards being less than the others, their gains also in all reason were to be less: partly because this was to be distributed into more hands, the Levites being now numerous, whereas the priests were but few.
31:50 An atonement - For their error noted, #Nu 31:14|,15,16, and withal for a memorial, or by way of gratitude for such a stupendous assistance and deliverance. We should never take any thing to ourselves in war or trade, of which we cannot in faith consecrate a part to God, who hates robbery for burnt - offerings. But when God has remarkably preserved and succeeded us, he expects we should make some particular return of gratitude to him.
