People's Bible Notes for Matthew 5:19

Mt 5:19 Shall break one of the least of these least commandments. The Pharisees taught that some commands were more important than others, and that it was a trivial matter to break the smallest commands. The papists still divide sin into "mortal" and "venial". Christ shows that the spirit of obedience does not seek to make such distinction. Shall be called the least. He may get into the kingdom, possibly, but such a spirit will give him a very low spiritual rank.

Discussion for Matthew 5

I noticed the are those who look at the beatitudes like commandments. Jesus compacted the commandments into 2; love the Lord with all your heart mind and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. The beatitudes are love in action as a result of being born again, following Him and bearing fruit.

The law still stands. Christ said it in v.17. He came to fulfill what was written of him, that he should suffer and be crucified, not to do away with the law. Whosoever breaks one of the least commandments he mentioned in verses 1-16 and teaches others to do the same will not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
