Wesley's Notes for Luke 1:36

1:36 And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth - Though Elisabeth was of the house of Aaron, and Mary of the house of David, by the fathers side, they might be related by their mothers. For the law only forbad heiresses marrying into another tribe. And so other persons continually intermarried; particularly the families of David and of Levi.

Discussion for Luke 1

  • Matt
Elizabeth and Mary were cousins, meaning their mothers were sisters (and daughters/ descendants of Aaron). Zacharias was a Levitical priest. Mary's father, Heli, was of Judah: a Judahite. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, is of the tribe of Levi and Judah: Lord of Lords (Priest Line/ Levi) and King of Kings (King Line/ Judah).

In verses 6 and 7 Elizabeth was barren, but this doesn't mean she didn't have God's favor because in verse 6 she is described as righteous. Unfortunate circumstances happen to good people sometimes.

Luke has a remarkable way of telling us the many ways that our God can do amazing and miraculous things. Our faith can only strengthen when we believe in Him.
