Wesley's Notes for John 1:2

1:2 The same was in the beginning with God - This verse repeats and contracts into one the three points mentioned before. As if he had said, This Word, who was God, was in the beginning, and was with God.

Discussion for John 1

  • Daniel
This wonderful book begins by unveiling the Person of Jesus Christ as being Almighty God. He is the God of Israel, and the Elohim, the Creator of heaven and the earth. He is the God of Israel, but Israel did not receive Him (as their Messiah). As many as received Him, he gives them a divine birth. I note this is 'not by bloods' speaking of the blood of offerings, (geneology is seed, i.e the cross

The name of God who was in the old testament is Jesus Christ in the new testament just as John is saying . Look at what Paul about Him in 1st Timothy 3:16 God revealed Himself in fresh ... Also , John 1:14 . Jesus is the father ,son and the Holy Ghost . He created the world and human beings .

Again, when John says that Jesus (the Word) is God he is not speaking in vacuum. He knew from reading the Scriptures that the one he baptized was God. Isa. 12:2 reads, "See, God has come to save me! I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord is my strength and song; he is my salvation. And guess what! That's what the name Jesus means, "the God who saves" or "God save me."

Again, if John says "and the Word (meaning Jesus) was God," then Jesus is God. Let's believe what John tells us and stop trying to come up with some way to say that he is not. This is why Paul tells us in Romans 10 that "we must confess that Jesus is Lord (meaning the Lord or the God) to be saved. Let's sum it up this way: Jesus and God are the same. That is to say, Jesus is God's name.
