Wesley's Notes for Ecclesiastes 3:9

3:9 What profit - Seeing then all events are out of man's power, and no man can do or enjoy any thing at his pleasure, but only when God pleaseth, as has been shewed in many particulars, and is as true and certain in all others, hence it follows, that all men's labours, without God's blessing, are unprofitable, and utterly insufficient to make them happy.

    To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
    2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
    3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

    For everything there is an appointed time. God wants his creatures to enjoy life! Eccl 3:11 he put time indefinite in our hearts that's why humans do all they can to not die, prolonge it by going to Dr. when sick, if humans really believed there glory was at hand they would not prolonged things. But when 1 Cor 15:21-26 is fulfilled after Jesus rules for 1000 yrs, Adamic death is brought to an end.

    To expect justice in every situation is unrealistic. Rather than feel anxious about what is happening in the world today, we should wait on Jehovah God to set matters straight.

    Verse 20 shows that men and beasts have the same eventuality. They simply go back to the dust. It did not say that men go to heaven or hell, but just like the animals men simply returns to dust.

    For me, this verse alludes to a sense of presence. Savor each moment of your life as they are given to you. If you only ever want steak when soup is served, and wish only for soup while steak is being prepared, then you find yourself always dissatisfied, even though you were given everything you ever wanted. Stop clinging to the past, and quit sitting around waiting on the future. Be fashionable to the time.
