Wesley's Notes for 2 Thessalonians 2:7

2:7 He will surely be revealed; for the mystery - The deep, secret power of iniquity, just opposite to the power of godliness, already worketh. It began with the love of honour, and the desire of power; and is completed in the entire subversion of the gospel of Christ. This mystery of iniquity is not wholly confined to the Romish church, but extends itself to others also. It seems to consist of, Human inventions added to the written word. Mere outside performances put in the room of faith and love. Other mediators besides the man Christ Jesus. The two last branches, together with idolatry and bloodshed, are the direct consequences of the former; namely, the adding to the word of God. Already worketh - In the church. Only he that restraineth - That is, the potentate who successively has Rome in his power. The emperors, heathen or Christian; the kings, Goths or Lombards; the Carolingian or German emperors.

People's Bible Notes for 2 Thessalonians 2:7

2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity. This revelation of the man of sin. It was a mystery, that is, something yet hidden. Doth already work. Causes are beginning to work which will lead to it. Only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way. He that hindereth must first be taken out of the way. There was no room for an arrogant spiritual power in Rome as long as imperial Rome continued to persecute the church. A persecuted church cannot be a haughty church. Two things were needful before the papal power could be developed; viz., the overthrow of paganism, and the removal of the capital of the Empire from Rome. When these things were done, it was free to seize the old Roman scepter.

Richard McGovern's comment on 2015-07-08 10:11:18:

I believe that the Church, spirit filled believers in Jesus name, are the restraining force holding back and hindering Satan 's powers from being fully released on earth, until the rapture of the Church takes place. Because of the power and authority giving to the Church believers in Jesus name.

Ernest Atuahene Amoako's comment on 2014-10-02 06:41:09:

The church is retraining him the lawlessness mystery of the iniquity That is the reason why sometimes a brethren orborn again christian will rise from a family or community pray and salvation or revival will take place

Apostle Ejim Nnamdi's comment on 2014-08-23 21:47:18:

By revelation the mystery of iniquity here will be properly understood by differentiating between sin and iniquity, iniquity is that generational sin that runs in the lineage,it is more terrible than sin.its mystery shall only be dealt with by the brightness of his coming which is the revelation of Gods word rehma .it takes God to terminate iniquity,it is the deep rooted sin which we inherited from birth,it grants demons access into ones life.u may say but what of sin,1john said he that is born of God does not sin,the church has no problem with sin but iniquity.but in this last days,I see God through the brightness of his coming terminate iniquity in the chuch in jesus name, amen remain salty for the lord.

Lets look at another idea here. Read Daniel, chapter 11 esp., verse 45. Then read verse 1 in chapter 12.Next, read verse 7 in Revelation chapter 12. Michel is the protector of Israel and when he goes back to heaven to kick Satan out for the last time, Israel is left unprotected. book of Job tells us how Satan goes back and forth from earth to heaven. Time will tell which belief is correct.

Ifeanyi Agbaim's comment on 2014-02-08 23:23:34:

The church has been the restraining power of evil The church has resisted the devil that is why satan can t carry out his wickedness the way he wills So until the church be taken away raptured the wicked man can t be revealed

Chapter 2 of Thessalonians concerns itself with the Antichrist being revealed. Someone may be keeping his identity hidden because that person is being restrained by the Antichrist from letting the truth be known. Eventually, the person will let the truth be known.

Robert Boyd's comment on 2013-11-16 17:57:17:

There is a principle at work in this passage. The principle is that where ever the Spirit of the Lord is, sin, the evil one, nor his evil can invade. That principle has been in place from the beginning. When evil tried to invade heaven it was evacuated by the power of a Holy God who's Holiness would not give place to it; not even for a moment. 2 Corinthians 3:17 says, "Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty". This is understood in the first part of the verse: "For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work." 1 John 4:3b says that "...that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is in the world". So then, he that keeps back the forces of evil that dwell in the antichrist personality is the believer in whom the Holy Spirit dwells.

Michael J. Seymour's comment on 2013-10-24 13:18:01:

I have often read this verse with the conviction that, "he who now letteth shall let, until he be taken out of the way..." is a reference to The Church, with the Holy Spirit,in the Earth! When the Lord takes his Church away, "then shall that wicked man be revealed..." The Church is He who is Holding the wicked man back. In my opinion.

Timothy Wayne George's comment on 2013-04-15 18:33:55:

The mystery of of lawlessness is already at work, and will get worse as the time of the end comes. Just as the birth pains of a woman in labor intensifies as she becomes closer to birth, so it will be. There are many antichrist, but the Holy Spirit will continue to restrain evil, until God the Father takes Him out of the way. Then the Antichrist, the man of sin, will be revealed, who will be the son of perdition. So the apostasy comes first, then the gathering of the Saints in the air with the Lord Jesus Christ. Then the lawless one, the idle shepherd will be revealed. Watch and pray that you will be counted worthy to escape these things, for God will send strong delusion to those who miss the gathering of the Saints in the air, and they will believe the lie of the Antichrist by receiving the mark of the beast 666. Rev. 3:10 Jesus promises to keep the Church from the hour of temptation that shall try all those who take pleasure in godlessness. Repentance toward God, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save you.

Sheila's comment on 2013-03-20 06:22:25:

Iím with you Cheryl Lynn,
Godís real kids will be removed because the Holy Spirit lives in us and we will need to be out of the world so that we are not praying and trusting God here any more! Then the wicked ones will have to go through it all and be destroyed with Satan and his angels. We will see who stands up and says he is God. But we know better off, and Our redeemer will call us away! Thank You Jesus!!

Rodney Smith's comment on 2012-05-28 18:39:55:

This mystery of iniquity was a first century individual. he is the one who had to be removed.
It is impossible for this wicked individual to be the church or the Holy Spirit, like many bible students think. This individual was alive in the first century, therfore the man of sin must have been revealed in the first century. Nero was the perfect candidate for the man of sin, because he put "almighty God' on his coins and forced everybody to choose to worship Nero or God.
Nobody could buy or sell without these coins.
This was the first century mark of the beast.

How long are the mainstream christian believers
going to preach the wicked gospel of Armageddon, to promote the wartime agenda
for the wicked new world order maniacs???

I wonder why so many christians are being duped
by these unreasonable Messiancs expectation?

Cheryl Lynn's comment on 2010-07-21 11:39:54:

God is allowing iniquity or sin to take place, but eventually he will remove the Holy Spirit. At that time the Anti-Christ will be revealed. If the Holy Spirit is gone then the believers must also be taken out since the believers are indwell ed with the Holy Spirit.
