Wesley's Notes for Genesis 6:4

6:4 There were giants, and men of renown - They carried all before them, 1. With their great bulk, as the sons of Anak, #Nu 13:33|, and, 2. With their great name, as the king of Assyria, #Isa 37:11|. Thus armed, they daringly insulted the rights of all their neighbours, and trampled upon all that is just and sacred.

Dear Ricky S. Here are some verses to look up, that may help you to understand the error in that teaching: Psalm 104:4;Luke 24:39;Matthew 22:30;Mark 12:25;Luke 20:34;Luke 20:35; Hebrews 2:16. In context to what all was happening in the world at the time; and the verse immediately following; it was because men who had knowledge and upbringing in the things of God, turned away from the conviction.

Yes, Cheryl: in the whole context of the sentence, and of the whole chapter; it talks about what God saw as rejecting His Spirit, and eventually causing the utter corruption of the world. Look in Strong's concordance; the word translated Giants, literally means a Bully, or Tyrant; secondarily, Giant. Now put together the whole verse: they forsook God's Spirit to become great in this world! see v3!

As it was in the days of Noah, SO SHALL IT BE in the days of the coming of the
    Son of man.

Ricky S, that is an idea, started by unbelievers without the Holy Spirit. Angels are spirits; and have not flesh and bones like we have (Luke 24:39): they do not have the capacity to reproduce or breed like humans. The sons of God (Luke 3:38), as Moses called them through the Spirit, were the descendants of Seth (Genesis 4:25-26); and it was apostasy; for no longer obeying the Spirit.

Sons of God are the fallen Angels. There fornication with the women created the giants
