I think the phrase \"in the Spirit\" would be more uniquely meaningful if rendered \"in (the) spirit\". Meaning, our human spirit. For this is where we contact God. God is not only \"in\" our spirit but also \"mingled\" with it: \"He who is joined to the Lord is on spirit\". When interpreted in this way it removes all question of how to pray in \"the Spirit\", which, properly, would be interpreted as in The Spirit of God; i.e. the Holy Spirit. It should be obvious that we must be in The Spirit when we pray but the issue is this: where is that, specificall, and how do we enter there or, for that matter, how do we know when we are there?
