- Darby Bible

Ac 1:8 Ye shall receive power. Not temporal power, such as they dreamed of, but spiritual and moral power. Ye shall be witnesses to me. Testify of him of their personal knowledge. They all knew personally of his life, his miracles, his death, his resurrection, and the Great Commission. There could be no mistake. Their witness is true, unless they were deceivers. In Jerusalem. First, in the headquarters of Judaism, the capital of their own country, the place where the Lord was crucified; then in an ever-widening circle from that center; in Judea, then in Samaria, then to the uttermost parts of the earth. This order was followed exactly. It should always be followed in our efforts to evangelize the world.

1:8 But ye shall receive power - and shall be witnesses to me - That is, ye shall be empowered to witness my Gospel, both by your preaching and suffering.

But ye shall receive power, after that the holy Ghost is come vpon you.

I reads as if God gave the Apostles power first and then the Holy Ghost came afterwards.

The Holyspirit comes first before receiving the power. The power is to launch us fully into that which Jesus has commissioned us to do.

Alli Olufunmilayo's comment on 2012-10-16 09:34:16:

This verse points to the fact that without Holy Spirit, we cannot do anything. So if you have not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, you have great work to do to be able to function well as a believer.

Pastor's comment on 2012-11-21 00:29:36:

We can understand the New Testament better by studying the Old Testament, for it is a shadow of the New Testament. When God chose David to be king, He sent Samuel to anoint him. That gave him authority to go and rule. So anointing is synonymous with power, i.e. authority to execute the commission in Mark 16. You can only be a true witness if you have the experience, not hearsay that’s why it is important to receive the Holy Ghost. Be blessed.

ELAINA WHITE's comment on 2012-12-12 21:15:58:

When you truly fall in love with Jesus, HE will anoint you from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Falling in love with Jesus means to take all of HIS KNOWLEDGE, not only what you want. But you must love Jesus fully. Not only when it is convenient for you, or it is working for you.

Why the Gospels stories do not support each other?

Emmanuel Prah's comment on 2013-01-19 10:15:51:

The holy spirit is a supernatural power.

Adu Gyamfi Emmanuel's comment on 2013-03-08 02:15:23:

Without the holy spirit you are not a vessel in Christ, so pray without season for it and you shall receive Power to lead you. Stay blessed.
