4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.
10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?
14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:
20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.
28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:
39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
40 And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

Matthew Henry's 1 Samuel Chapter 20 Bible commentary...
David consults Jonathan. (1-10) Jonathan's covenant with David. (11-23) Saul, missing David, seeks to kill Jonathan. (24-34) Jonathan takes leave of David. (35-42)1-10 The trials David met with, prepared him for future advancement. Thus the Lord deals with those whom he prepares unto glory. He does not put them into immediate possession of the kingdom, but leads them to it through much tribulation, which he makes the means of fitting them for it. Let them not murmur at his gracious appointment, nor distrust his care; but let them look forward with joyful expectation to the crown which is laid up for them. Sometimes it appears to us that there is but a step between us and death; at all times it may be so, and we should prepare for the event. But though dangers appear most threatening, we cannot die till the purpose of God concerning us is accomplished; nor till we have served our generation according to his will, if we are believers. Jonathan generously offers David his services. This is true friendship. Thus Christ testifies his love to us, Ask, and it shall be done for you; and we must testify our love to him, by keeping his commandments.
11-23 Jonathan faithfully promises that he would let David know how he found his father affected towards him. It will be kindness to ourselves and to ours, to secure an interest in those whom God favours, and to make his friends ours. True friendship rests on a firm basis, and is able to silence ambition, self-love, and undue regard for others. But who can fully understand the love of Jesus, who gave himself as a sacrifice for rebellious, polluted sinners! how great then ought to be the force and effects of our love to him, to his cause, and his people!
24-34 None were more constant than David in attending holy duties; nor had he been absent, but self-preservation obliged him to withdraw. In great peril present opportunities for Divine ordinances may be waved. But it is bad for us, except in case of necessity, to omit any opportunity of statedly attending on them. Jonathan did wisely and well for himself and family, to secure an interest in David, yet for this he is blamed. It is good to take God's people for our people. It will prove to our advantage at last, however it may now be thought against our interest. Saul was outrageous. What savage beasts, and worse, does anger make men!
35-42 The separation of two such faithful friends was grievous to both, but David's case was the more deplorable, for David was leaving all his comforts, even those of God's sanctuary. Christians need not sorrow, as men without hope; but being one with Christ, they are one with each other, and will meet in his presence ere long, to part no more; to meet where all tears shall be wiped from their eyes.

This verse means that Jonathan loved David very well, Jonathan knew that God made David special to build Israel up and to save them from Philistines.

No this was no gay relationship. This particular area of scripture is one that the homosexuals use to try to justify their sinful relationships.God would never allow sin of any kind to be used as a justification for doing wrong. It is simply a close relationship between two people. Haven't you ever had a really close friend and you were friends and you loved one another very deeply? I'm thankful tha folks can have true loving relationships in their lives where one holds the other far above themselves.
Shaa Rei's 1 Samuel Chapter 20 comment on 7/06/2012, 11:22am...
Jonathan loved David as himself. He saw that David was innocent before Saul his father. He saw how much his sister Michal adored David even so much as to save his life. He saw how much the people sang about David killing tens of thousands. And he saw his fathers countenance change toward David. Jonathan was a man that saw alot. His actions and motives were all based on what he saw. He saw honey and hungry people and did bid them to eat. The Words tell you plainly what was said and done. It is profitable to compare
with your own heart to the heart of this mans. He never looked at his own circumstances, his own troubles, his own right to the throne. He put David first. If only people would treat each other like this.what is Love. God is love. Let God reign in your lives. Let Love rain in your heart. There is no other happiness:)

What does God first commands us to do? To love Him with all are hearts, souls, minds and to love our neighbors second.{fellow humans} Jonathan saw in David what the Lord saw in David and felt honored to be his best friend. David felt honesty and loyalty from someone who he could trust in a perilous and frightening time in his life. Johnathan personally experienced Davids great faith in the GOD of Abraham. What a story that would be. Ask him about that when you get to HEAVEN. PRAISE GOD

what a perverse mind this was not a gay relationship.you should repent.vs 3 this covenant was a mutual agreement in which David and Johathan were bound to to care for the needs and attend to the interests of each other. It was a treaty as between equals yet these two men were not exactly equals. it relationship was initiated by Jonathan because he was a member of the royal household. this sound selfish ( as is own soul) I have a relationship with my best friend who is an Evangelist I am not in her at her standard, I am a born again and love the Lord. We both are almost alike when it comes to loving God. we have a bonded soul relationship, By the way I am married and she is single. But we feel each other pain and distress, Our love is because of God's Love, we look out for each other. Now my daughter question our relationship.we just have a love for each because Of God's love.God is love.

No, there common bond was their love for God which bound them together. Do you really think a God of holiness would a homosexual relationship which is an abomination to him?
