Wesley's Notes for 1 Corinthians 3:12

3:12 If any one build gold, silver, costly stones - Three sorts of materials which will bear the fire; true and solid doctrines. Wood, hay, stubble - Three which will not bear the fire. Such are all doctrines, ceremonies, and forms of human invention; all but the substantial, vital truths of Christianity.

People's Bible Notes for 1 Corinthians 3:12

1Co 3:12 If any man buildeth upon this foundation. There is only one foundation for all builders to build upon. The church or temple will be of the character of the material built upon it. Gold, silver, precious stones. If this material be precious and imperishable, if apostolic doctrines and men molded into the image of Christ be this material, it is well. Wood, hay, stubble. If erroneous doctrines and unstable men, this will all be revealed in due time.

Sis. Kath, sorry, but Paul was not talking to baby Christians. If we read the whole context of the letter, they have had a significant amount of time, and been very blessed favor from God, with great Teachers. Also, if we look at the record written by Luke, in Acts, they should have been MUCH FARTHER ALONG, for the grace bestowed on them! The point is, that we must abide in Christ, or wither away.

That verse is for baby Christians who just received Christ....This is a metaphor... At the moment, they could just understand the most basic preaching needed for their maturity... (milk) And then as they grow Spiritually, little by little, step by step, they could already fully understand and grasp deeper preaching from the Lord... (meat)

Verse 19 shows that God views the wisdom of this world as foolishness. God is the wisest being of all and is the source of true wisdom.

"I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able, neither yet now are ye able." This is NOT what we are called in Christ to be; i.e. carnally minded, and never really able to eat the solid food of the deep things of God, so we can grow. A normal child looks up to grown-ups, and thinks about itself being grown up. So why would Christians want to stay toddlers in diapers?
